May Day

In Great Britain, the first day of May  is known as May Day. It is the time of year when warmer weather begins and flowers and trees start to blossom. It is said to be a time of love and romance. It is when people celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs that are expressions of joy and hope after a long winter. Traditional English May Day celebrations include Morris Dancing, crowning a May Queen and Dancing around a Maypole

Mother's Day

In the United States "Mother's Day 2012" is observed on the second Sunday of May (13th) and celebrates the important roles that mothers serve in society. Anna Jarvis of West Virginia started the holiday in 1908 to pay tribute to mothers, but it wasn't until 1914 that President Woodrow Wilson made the holiday official by signing it into law.

England  also has an equivalent holiday to Mother's Day called "Mothering Day" that is celebrated on the fourth Sunday during the month of Lent. this year it took place on the 18th of March.

APRIL "this month we celebrate..."

Every year, the first day of April we celebrate April Fools Day.

 WHO 

Every year, World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April to mark the anniversary of the founding of WHO (World Health Organization) in 1948. Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of concern for WHO. This year the topic of World Health Day in 2012 is Ageing and health with the theme "Good health adds life to years"

MARCH "this month we celebrate..."

World Book Day was celebrated for the first time on April 23^rd. The connection between

23^rd April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Spain as a way to honour Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day.

In 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on this date because of the Catalonian festival and because the date is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare and the death of Miguel de Cervantes.

In the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, World Book Day is held annually on the first Thursday in March. It was decided to avoid the established international 23^rd April date due to clashes with Easter school holidays, as well as the fact that it is also the National Saint's Day of England, St George's Day.

Carnival / Mardi Gras / Fat Tuesday

A Christian holiday and popular cultural phenomenon, Mardi Gras dates back thousands of years to pagan spring and fertility rites. Also known as Carnival, it is celebrated in many countries around the world–mainly those with large Roman Catholic populations–on the day before the religious season of Lent begins. Brazil, Venice and New Orleans play host to some of the holiday's most famous public festivities, drawing thousands of tourists and revelers every year. SCHOOL DAY OF NON-VIOLENCE AND PEACE, 30th JANUARY

Next week, we celebrate the School Day of Non-violence and Peace (30th January). We will have different activities (including an outdoor one in which some students will read texts about peace and some pigeons will be released) aimed at developing a peaceful behavior among our students.

The goal of this day is to point out the importance of education in and for tolerance, solidarity, respect for human rights, non violence and peace. And the importance of schools as instruments of peace and understanding between people of different formation, race, culture and religion. Likewise, January 30 is the anniversary of the death of the spiritual and national Indian leader, Mahatma Gandhi, murdered by a Buddhist fanatic.

Chinese New year

Monday, 23rd, Chinese New Year: This is the first day in the Year of the dragon. Kung Hei Fat Choy means Happy New Year in Chinese language. Chinese New Year is popularly called the Spring Festival, and the festivities last for 15 days. It is also referred to as the lunar new year because it starts with the new moon on the first day of the new year and ends with the full moon 15 days later. The festival is colourfully celebrated with fireworks, dances (such as the famous Lion dance) and the giving of gifts, flowers and sweets. Gold is a dominant colour to symbolise the wish for prosperity, and red is also much used as a lucky colour.

On October 31st, we celebrate Halloween, thought to be the one night of the year when ghosts, witches, and fairies are especially active. 

                                                                
No one really knows the origins of Halloween. What we do know for sure is that Halloween is on the eve of a major Catholic festival, All Saints (1st November) and the eve of the pagan Celtic festival known as Samhain.
