Monday, 23rd, Chinese New Year: This is the first day in the Year of the dragon. Kung Hei Fat Choy means Happy New Year in Chinese language. Chinese New Year is popularly called the Spring Festival, and the festivities last for 15 days. It is also referred to as the lunar new year because it starts with the new moon on the first day of the new year and ends with the full moon 15 days later. The festival is colourfully
celebrated with fireworks, dances (such as the famous Lion dance) and
the giving of gifts, flowers and sweets. Gold is a dominant colour to
symbolise the wish for prosperity, and red is also much used as a lucky
colour.
